Cristina Gruta, PharmD
Pharmacist Specialist

Dr. Cristina Gruta functions as the clinical pharmacist specialist for 360: The Positive Care Center at UCSF’s Men of Color Program (MOCP) where she works with patients to support their adherence to Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) as well as work in conjunction with their medical providers to design and optimize HIV and HIV-related pharmacotherapy.

Dr. Gruta is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Family and Community Medicine. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the UCSF School of Pharmacy in 1994 and completed two pharmacy residencies: one in Pharmacy Practice at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and one in HIV/AIDS at UCSF at San Francisco General Hospital.

She has been faculty at the NCCC since 1996 where she is a senior pharmacy consultant for three national provider consultation lines: the HIV Telephone Consultation Service (HIV Warmline), the Post-exposure Prophylaxis Hotline (PEPline), and the Perinatal HIV Hotline and Referral Service.  Since 1996 Dr. Gruta has also served as faculty for the San Francisco AIDS Education and Training Center (SFAETC) where she has served as director of pharmacy training.  Her SFAETC work has focused on teaching physicians, nurses, and pharmacists about HIV pharmacotherapy.

More recently, she has focused her training efforts with community pharmacists and correctional medicine providers.  Lastly, on behalf of the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center (PAETC), Dr. Gruta serves as a Pharmacist Consultant for the California State Office of AIDS. 

Dr. Gruta has lectured extensively on the topics of HIV pharmacology, HIV drug-drug interactions, and management of body fluid exposures.  She is volunteer faculty for UCSF’s departments of Clinical Pharmacy and Family and Community Medicine with a decade’s worth experience of teaching and precepting students and residents for the UCSF Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine.

She has served as course chair for the NCCC’s Faculty Development Workshop for AETC Clinical Consultants and Pharmacists as well as numerous HIV courses for SFAETC.

Dr. Gruta has conducted research in the areas of opportunistic infection prophylaxis trends, antiretroviral usage trends and in post-exposure prophylaxis with abstracts having been presented in major HIV conferences like the International AIDS Conference and Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.
